Borghetto

Borghetto: a historic village near the Nure river

Hi everyone! Today we're going to talk about Borghetto, a small hamlet in the municipality of Piacenza, located just a few steps from the Nure river. This place has an interesting history, in fact, as early as 1309, there was a mention of a church dedicated to San Giacomo Maggiore. But not only that, Borghetto was a possession of the Radini Tedeschi family in the 15th century, who later obtained the creation of a county. In 1923, with the incorporation of the municipality of San Lazzaro Alberoni into that of Piacenza, Borghetto became a fraction of Piacenza.

The church of San Giacomo Maggiore and the village

One of the main monuments of the hamlet is the church of San Giacomo Maggiore, built in the 18th century and inspired by the basilica of Santa Maria di Campagna in Piacenza. The tripartite neoclassical architectural style facade is impressive and charming. The interior of the basilica-shaped church is divided into three naves and three bays, decorated with frescoes and barrel vaults. Continuing the visit of the hamlet, you can admire the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, where a reproduction of the "True effigy of the Blessed Virgin miraculous of Ajuto" is preserved. Then there is Villa Radini Tedeschi, a historical building with a beautiful park.

Transport and the past of the Piacenza-Cremona railway

To reach Borghetto, you can take the Piacenza-Cremona railway, which runs right along the hamlet. Between 1940 and 1985, there was also a railway station called Borghetto San Lazzaro. This station played an important role in the history of the Piacenza-Cremona railway, and is still affectionately remembered by the older inhabitants of the hamlet.

Despite a recent natural disaster, the flooding of the Nure in 2015, Borghetto is a lively hamlet rich in culture and history.
