Pezzana
Discovering Pezzana: a small Piedmontese village
Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Pezzana, a charming town in the province of Vercelli in Piedmont, with a population of about 1260 inhabitants. This village is rich in history and art, and is perfect for those who want to discover the charm of lesser-known but equally fascinating places.
The history of Pezzana
Pezzana is a small village that has ancient origins, dating back to the Neolithic era. Its name was originally "Peciana" and was first mentioned in the writings of Bishop Ingone in the 10th century. In the following centuries, the village was at the center of conflicts between different local noble families, such as the Ajazza and Avogadro, whose most important figure was Raniero Avogadro. It was he who put an end to the tyranny of the notorious heretic Dolcino.
The symbols of Pezzana
The coat of arms and the banner of Pezzana were granted in 2002 by the President of the Republic. The banner is a very evocative yellow flag.
Monuments and places of interest
Pezzana is a true architectural gem, rich in churches and sanctuaries that will leave you speechless. The church of Sant'Eusebio, dedicated to the patron saint of the village, is an imposing building designed by Antonio Malinverni and consecrated in 1834. But it is not the only noteworthy church: there is also the church of S. Maria della Bona, dating back to the 14th century and privately owned, and the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, known for its beautiful 17th-century altarpiece.
But that's not all: next to the parish church we also find the Confraternity of S. Anna, the oldest association in the village, and on the road that connects the town to Caresana there is a small chapel dedicated to the Madonna of the Seven Sorrows.
Social life
Pezzana has a long tradition of festivals and celebrations, but the most important of all is the patron saint's festival, which is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. However, in case of overlap with the patron saint's festival in Vercelli, the festival is moved to the second Sunday.
Infrastructure and transport
Pezzana is served by an efficient public transport network, as well as by a bus line that connects the village to Vercelli and other nearby cities. However, between 1886 and 1935, the village was also accessible by train thanks to the stop of the Vercelli-Casale tramway.
Sports
For sports lovers, Pezzana has a curiosity not to be missed: Giuseppe Seccatore, known as the "Pezzanese doc", a player for La Biellese in the 1920s, scored an impressive 32 consecutive penalty kicks, a record that is difficult to match.
In short, if you have the opportunity to visit this small Piedmontese village, do not hesitate to do so! You won't regret it.
