Petruro Irpino

Petruro Irpino: a village on a rock

Petruro Irpino is a small municipality in the province of Avellino, in Campania, with a population of only 288 inhabitants. Located on a panoramic hill on a rocky spur in the middle of Sabato Valley, the village is situated in the area known as Stretto di Barba. The name of the village has Latin origins, which could derive from the term "petra" (rock) or "petrurium" (stone-rock). In 1950, the adjective "Irpino" was added, referring to the historical-geographical district of Irpinia.

The history of Petruro Irpino

Petruro was originally a hamlet of Montefusco, but during the Angevin period, the feud passed into the hands of Giovanni Mentella. In the fifteenth century, the D'Afflitto family became the new owners of the feud. In the middle of the fifteenth century, the feudal possession of Petruro was transferred to the de Candida family, and then to the Calenda family at the beginning of the sixteenth century. In 1695, King Charles II of Spain invested Gaetano Marano with the title of Marquis of Petruro. After the end of the Marano family in the eighteenth century, the title of Marquis passed to Alessandro Bonito, and then became extinct definitively.
