The territory of Pescorocchiano has a long history dating back to Roman times. Here stood the ancient Nersae, a city of the Equi people that became a municipium in Roman times. Nersae was the capital of the Res publica Aequiculanorum and its republican sanctuary was located on the top of the hill of Civitella di Nesce. This sanctuary was divided into two terraces, the upper one housed the actual temple, while the lower one was supported by an impressive polygonal wall in III-IV style, dating back to the mid-2nd century BC.
