Pescopennataro: history, culture, and nature in Molise.

Origins of the Name

Pescopennataro was originally called "Castrum Peschi Pignatari", meaning a "fortress that emerges from the ground". "Pignatari", on the other hand, derives from the conifers present in the area. Over time, the noun "Castrum" was lost and the palatal nasal -gn- was turned into the intense sordid nasal -nn-. Hence the current form.

History

Pescopennataro's history is extremely interesting and dates back to 571 with the founding of the village by the Lombards. Over the centuries, the town has suffered the various vicissitudes of the politics managed by the Ottonean house of Saxony and has been an integral part of various administrative structures. In 1805, the Molise Earthquake caused a lot of damage to the town but did not break the resilience of the inhabitants. In 1943, Pescopennataro suffered damage during World War II but nevertheless rose from its ashes. Today, Pescopennataro is a shining example of how history and culture can survive and thrive.
