Pescopagano, also known as Piscupagàne in the local dialect, is an Italian municipality in the province of Potenza, Basilicata. The municipality has a population of 1689 residents and covers an area of 69 km². Pescopagano is primarily mountainous and is located in the extreme west of the region, bordering the provinces of Avellino and Salerno in Campania. The city was awarded the title of City Decorated for Civil Merit in 2005 for its dedication after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake.

History
Pescopagano has ancient origins: the first settlements date back to the ancient Lavra in the area, near rivers and streams. The territory was tormented by the Samnite Wars, Pyrrhus' expeditions, and the Roman War against Hannibal. The city was originally called Petra Pagana due to a pagan cult that documented idols and inscriptions dedicated to the deity Silvanus.
In 867, the Saracens built a fortress on the highest rock, which became a strategic point for the residents of Conza and nearby villages during the wars against the Saracens. Over the centuries, the feudal territory of Pescopagano passed from hand to hand, until it was purchased in 1697 by the d'Andrea Marquises, who were the owners until the end of feudalism.
In 1799, during the Parthenopean Republic, Pescopagano became one of the 14 cantons of the Ofanto Department. In 1861, the city was the scene of battles during the brigandage against the formations led by Carmine Crocco and José Borjes.
