The history of Pesco Sannita

Origins

Pesco Sannita, originally called Pesclum, was a castle that already existed in the time of the Lombards. Over the centuries, the name transformed into Pesco, Piesco, Lo Pesco, Lo Pesco de la Macza, and finally to its current name. During the Norman period, the castle reached its maximum splendor under the rule of the della Marra family, whose name was given to the castle, although it was later mistakenly written as Pescolamazza.

Feudal history

In 1120, Rainolfo, the count of Avellino and Airola, entered the county of Ariano with the intention of devastating one of its castles but was discouraged by the well-fortified Pesclum, then possessed by Gerardo della Marra. Towards the end of 1132, the present-day Pesco Sannita was attacked by the constable of Benevento, Rolpotone di Sant'Eustachio, with the help of Rainolfo, but the fortress managed to resist. From the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, Pesco Sannita had several feudal successions and was almost always united with Pietrelcina.
