Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Pescasseroli, a town in Abruzzo with 2078 inhabitants located in the province of L'Aquila, which houses the management body of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The city is immersed in nature and is located in the hydrographic basin of Alto Sangro, surrounded by the Marsican mountains.

Physical geography

Pescasseroli: Abruzzese treasure among mountains and nature.

Territory

The municipality's territory is included in the protected area of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and is located east of the Apennine watershed. It is located in a mountain valley that descends from the Gioia dei Marsi pass to the mountain basin at an altitude of 1167, surrounded by the Montagna Grande group and Mount Marsicano. To the northwest is the Aceretta pass that connects Pescasseroli to Villavallelonga. On the Coasts of Vitelle (mountain 1966) there is a ski resort belonging to the Alto Sangro ski area.

Climate

The climate of Pescasseroli is cold in winter and cool in summer. Thanks to its exposure to western humid currents, Pescasseroli is one of the wettest inhabited centers in the region, with meteorological precipitation often exceeding 1500 mm per year. Furthermore, the average annual temperature is one of the lowest in the region at the same altitude.

Origins of the name

The etymology of the name Pescasseroli has given rise to various hypotheses. Some scholars have suggested that the name derives from "peschio or pesco", meaning "high and steep place", while others maintain that "seroli" may come from "serra" or "serretta", indicating the closure of the gap that connects to the Serre mountains. However, according to the famous philosopher Benedetto Croce, the name "Pesclum ad Serolum" could mean the "peschio near the Sangro", since the Sangro River rises nearby and flows under the mountain.

History

Pescasseroli's territory was the endpoint of the transhumance of the Sannites. Included in the county of the Marsi until the High Middle Ages, it followed the historical and cultural vicissitudes of the Alto Sangro territory from the Late Middle Ages onwards.

The city has also undergone particular influences of the Marsi and the Peligni, two peoples who inhabited the Abruzzo region. Pescasseroli has been the scene of many historical and cultural events over the centuries, such as the Battle of Tagliacozzo and the Italian resistance during World War II. It has a strong culinary and cultural tradition, with numerous festivals and events throughout the year.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Pescasseroli is an enchanted place, surrounded by nature, which bewitches the hearts of its visitors. With its thousand-year-old history, rustic yet welcoming atmosphere, and high-quality cuisine, this city also enchants the most demanding travelers.
