Sant'Enea: a warm and welcoming atmosphere
Sant'Enea is a small village in the municipality of Perugia, located on top of a gentle hill lined with vineyards. Despite its small population, the village has a long history and a rich agricultural economy. In this article, we will explore the roots of Sant'Enea, its economy, and some of its historic monuments.
History: Roots in the 12th Century
Sant'Enea has roots dating back to the 12th century. The village owes its name to its patron, Saint Agnes, known in Latin as "Agnes" and eventually popularized as "Agnea" and finally "Enea". In 1252, there was a presence of a group of Camaldolese friars, who were dependent on the monastery of S. Severo in Perugia. The historic center of Sant'Enea is protected by defensive walls and accessible only through two gates.
Economy: Agriculture and Viticulture at the Center
Agriculture and viticulture are the main activities of the village of Sant'Enea. The city is known for its "ziri" terracotta pots, which are now almost impossible to find. In the 19th century, Marchese Cappoli started this activity, which was carried on by the residents for quite some time. The "ziri of Sant'Enea" are special because of the presence of a particular mysterious internal coating. Nowadays, the village is primarily dedicated to agriculture and pig farming. Every year, around the first week of May, the "Primavera a Sant'Enea" festival is held.
Monuments and Artistic Places: A Walk Through History
Sant'Enea is enchanting for its history and artistic monuments. Among the churches, the oldest is that of Sant'Agnese, built in 1252. Inside, there is a crucifix from the 18th century and three notable stained glass windows in the apse depicting Faith, Hope, and Charity. The church was restored and enlarged in 1444. From its origins until 1521, it was the seat of a Camaldolese priory dependent on the abbey of Sansepolcro. The chapel of the fallen is located at the entrance of the village and was originally flanked by a small convent of nuns. The church of the Cava is built on the site where there was a shrine with a painting of the Madonna and Child. Finally, the Romanesque-style bell tower, built at the end of the 18th century after the collapse of the previous one, of which only the foundation remains.
