A bit of history about Sant'Egidio

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about Sant'Egidio, a hamlet in the city of Perugia with 901 inhabitants. The area is famous for hosting the Perugia airport, known as the San Francesco International Airport. But did you know that Sant'Egidio also has an interesting history?

The area was fortified in the fifteenth century with a castle and a tower. Previously, there was a villa that the city of Perugia decided to reinforce. The castle played an important role because it was located on an old road that led to Assisi, making it an important reference point for the communities of the Perugian countryside and for those passing through on their way to the shrines of Assisi and Loreto.

In addition, the castle was a strategic-defensive position against Assisi, an old enemy of Perugia. Together with other castles, such as Civitella d'Arna and Ripa, it formed a line of defense to withstand the primary impact of an invasion. The castle of Sant'Egidio was actually the protagonist of a historic battle in July 1416, when the Captain of Fortune Braccio Fortebraccio da Montone defeated the Perugian troops of Malatesta Baglioni in the plain of Sant'Egidio. This victory led to the conquest of Perugia, of which Braccio Fortebraccio became the lord.

Sant'Egidio today

Today, Sant'Egidio is part of the city of Perugia and is part of the XII District called "Arna". The small town is still surrounded by green hills and has a privileged position just a few kilometers from the center of Perugia. But undoubtedly, the most famous thing about Sant'Egidio is its international airport.

The Perugia - Sant'Egidio Airport, also known as the San Francesco International Airport, is a modern regional airport that serves the city of Perugia and the Umbria region. There are flights to Rome, London, Brussels, and Tirana. The airport is just 7 km from the center of Perugia and has a convenient and affordable parking lot.

But Perugia - Sant'Egidio Airport is not just a departure and arrival destination, it is also a tourist attraction. The airport boasts a beautiful medieval-style control tower that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Truly charming!
