Pertica Bassa

Pertica Bassa: a commune nestled in the Sabbia Valley

Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about a small Italian commune located in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy: Pertica Bassa, or as it is said in the Brescia dialect, ''Pèrtega Basa''. This village has only 554 inhabitants, but it is rich in history and traditions.

Physical geography

Pertica Bassa is located within the Sabbia Valley, a long valley that extends for about 25 kilometers. The valley is characterized by pristine nature and a great variety of landscapes, ranging from mountains to valleys, from lakes to rivers.

The municipality of Pertica Bassa is part of the Mountain Community of the Sabbia Valley, an organization that brings together the municipalities of the area to promote the development and enhancement of the territory.

Origin of the name

But let's talk about the name ''Pertica Bassa'': did you know that it has a Lombard origin? In fact, during the wars, Lombard soldiers erected Perticae to honor their fallen or missing comrades in battle. The Perticae were tall wooden poles, topped by a replica of a dove that watched over the place where the event occurred. The name ''Pertica'' derives precisely from this custom and is present in many other place names in Lombardy.

History

The territory of Pertica Bassa was part of the supra-municipal organization called ''Universitas Perticae Vallis Sabbi'' from 1382 to 1797. This organization included, in addition to the current territory of the municipality of Pertica Alta, also the settlements of Bisenzio (now Lavenone) and Presegno (now part of the municipality of Lavenone).

Over the centuries, the territory of Pertica Bassa has undergone several changes in administrative ownership, until it became an independent municipality in 1805.

Symbols

The municipality of Pertica Bassa has its own coat of arms and its own flag. The coat of arms is divided into two parts: the upper part represents the dove symbol of the Perticae, while the lower one depicts a basket with a plant of grass. The flag, on the other hand, brings together the colors of the Italian flag (green, white and red) and the symbol of the dove.

Notes

If you decide to visit Pertica Bassa, do not forget to visit the parish church dedicated to Saint George, dating back to the eighteenth century, and the municipal palace, dating back to the nineteenth century.
