History

The history of Vatolla dates back to the Lombard period when the village was a fortified castle on the "Via di Lauriana". In 1034, Vatolla was incorporated into the district of Cilento and, over the centuries, was subject to numerous transfers of ownership. In 1525, it was granted as an autonomous fiefdom to the Del Pezzo and Griso families, then to the Rocca family, and finally to the Vargas Machuca dukes, who were granted the title of Marquis of Vatolla in 1788. Until 1810, the village was an autonomous municipality with a mayor and nine decurions. Subsequently, it was merged into the municipality of Perdifumo.

Geography

Vatolla is located at 465 meters above sea level and has about 500 inhabitants. Its location between Mount Stella and the sea means that the village enjoys an ideal climate for the cultivation of the Vatolla Onion. It is thought that Vatolla's location was chosen to build a castle guarding the Testene valley in front of the castle of Camilla.
