The Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol

The Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol is the most northern of the Italian provinces and of Trentino-Alto Adige, with an area of 7,400 km² and a population of approximately 533,175 people. The province is culturally and linguistically tied to Tyrol in Austria and, together with Trento, Veneto, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, belongs to the Triveneto geographic area.

The double denomination

The Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol is often simply referred to as "Bolzano", but its official names are "Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano - Alto Adige" or "Autonome Provinz Bozen - Südtirol" in German. The Bolzano region is made up of two autonomous provinces, and its official name requires the use of both. The inhabitants of the province are called "altoatesini", but in Italian they are also called "sudtirolesi".

Bolzano-Alto Adige: a province with two names.

The denomination in Ladino

The official denomination of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol has also been translated into Italian Ladino. The Ladino form used in the province is "Provinzia Autonoma de Balsan/Bulsan - Sul'tiröl". The use of the term "Südtirol" to indicate the territory between Brennero and Salorno would, according to some authors, be unjustified.

History

During the Austro-Hungarian domination, the territory of the current province of Bolzano was also known as "Mitteltirol" or Central Tyrol. "Sudtirol" (South Tyrol) was the term used for Trentino or the entire southern part of Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige), where a distinction was made between the Italian southern Tyrol ("italienisches Südtirol", "Welschsüdtirol" or "Welschtirol") and the German southern Tyrol ("Deutschsüdtirol", today's Alto Adige).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol has a double denomination because it is made up of two autonomous provinces. The inhabitants of the province are called "altoatesini" and their territory is culturally and linguistically tied to Tyrol in Austria. The province has an area of 7,400 km² and a population of approximately 533,175 people.
