Penna San Giovanni
Welcome to Penna San Giovanni!
Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk about a little Italian town that has stolen my heart: Penna San Giovanni, also simply called "La Penna" in the Marche dialect. This village of about 968 inhabitants is located in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region.
Physical geography
The beauty of Penna San Giovanni can only start with its geographical position. The town is located 630 meters above sea level, right between the valleys of the Salino and Tennacola rivers. The view from the top of the rocky promontory in which it's nestled is breathtaking: you can see from the Sibillini Mountains all the way to the Adriatic Sea.
Territory and climate
Just a few kilometers from the center of Penna San Giovanni is the Chienti river and its valley, one of the smaller and less known areas of the Sibillini Mountains National Park. Thanks to its position, Penna San Giovanni enjoys a mild and healthy climate, which makes it ideal for those who want to relax away from the stress of the city.
Sports
As happens in many Italian towns, football is also played in Penna San Giovanni. The local team is called Pennese and is famous for its white and blue colors. It plays its home games at the "Andrea Dezi" sports field, named after the team's goalkeeper who died of leukemia. The Pennese has had ups and downs over the years, but it's always been a reference point for sports enthusiasts in the area.
Culture
But Penna San Giovanni isn't just sports, it's also culture. Among its architectural treasures is one of the jewels of the province of Macerata: the municipal theater, entirely made of wood and from the 18th century. The theater hosts plays, music and dance shows, and represents a reference point for local culture.
Notes
For those who want to delve into the history and curiosities of this little Marche gem, there are several bibliographic sources to consult. Among the most famous are Giuseppe Colucci's "Delle Antichità Picene", the "Memorie istoriche della Terra di Pennasangiovanni", or Giambattista Bravi's "Album Pennese". The Sarnano municipal archives also hold interesting documents about the area.
Related voices
Despite its small size, Penna San Giovanni has several related voices at the regional and national level. Think of the Monti Azzurri Mountain Community, the figure of Giovanni da Penna San Giovanni or that of Giuseppe Colucci. There are also many curiosities about Antonio Liozzi, an eccentric character who lived in the town.
