Welcome to Val di Peio
Hello everyone! Today we will be talking about Val di Peio, a beautiful alpine valley in western Trentino. The valley is located next to the famous Val di Sole and is traversed by the Noce River. Here, you can see the valley in all its beauty with its classic "V" shape typical of river valleys.
Geography
Val di Peio is almost entirely located in the municipality of Peio, with a small part extending into the municipality of Ossana. There are also some areas of the municipality of Pellizzano in Val del Monte, containing a mountain pasture and forest subject to civic use administration. Val di Peio is situated close to the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello-Presanella group.
The valley has around 1,900 inhabitants, all residing in the municipality of Peio, with Cogolo as the capital of the municipality and other hamlets such as Celledizzo, Celentino, Comasine, Peio Paese, Peio Fonti, and Strombiano. Cogolo is a beautiful mountain village at 1170m, perfect for mountain and nature lovers, and even for those who want to enjoy the view of the famous 13 peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale mountain group, reachable from the top of Mount Vioz at 3645m.
History
Val di Peio has always been known for its magnetite iron mines and mineral waters. The Romans and Gauls may have already exploited the mines, while in 1398, the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Giorgio di Liechtenstein, granted the right to search for and excavate metals in Val di Sole.
Val di Peio was a land of ancient colonization, thanks to the resources of the subsoil. The area was considered a passage to Lombardy through the Montozzo pass, to Valtellina, Bormio, and Switzerland through the Sforzellina pass, making it a passage area for smugglers.
The land was also the site of mining activity, with several Lombard, Bergamo, and Como families settling there. The presence of iron is also responsible for the mineralization of the water sources, and their discovery dates back to the 16th century.
Tourism
Today, Val di Peio is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing trails are all available in the valley.
