Polesine

Welcome to Polesine

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Polesine, a hamlet of Pegognaga municipality, in the province of Mantua. The name comes from medieval Latin ''policinum'' and indicates those lands that are islands, emerged in the middle of the swamp and rich in vegetation.

A bit of history

The history of Polesine is very ancient. The archives of the Diocese of Mantua tell us that it was an oratory annexed to the court of the Gonzaga family and became an autonomous parish in 1528. In 1610, the parish was included in the vicariate of Suzzara. The parish church dedicated to Saint James the Great was rebuilt starting from 1775, preserving a large altarpiece depicting the martyrdom of Saint James, a work from 1605 attributed to the painter Ludovico Cardi. Among the valuable objects that can be found in the church, there is also a pipe organ from the 18th century, built by the famous organ builders Giuseppe and Angelo Bonatti from Desenzano in 1749.

The historical beauty of Polesine: among baroque churches and historic courtyards.

Places of interest

If you are passionate about religious architecture, the parish church of Saint James the Great will not disappoint you. With its Baroque style, it is a perfect example of sacred art. If you are instead lovers of history and culture, I recommend you to visit the numerous historical courts surrounding Polesine. Among these, the Cadalora Court or Ca' dell'Ora, which preserves a basilical structure stable and the balance to extract water from the well; the Chiavichetto Court, which owes its name to the function of controlling the waters of the Old Po of the nearby swamp Polzola, preserves an 18th-century manor house; and the Suore Court, which was part of the convent of Mantua of the Reverend Sisters of Saint Vincent and which in the 1500s amounted to 568 Mantuan biolche.

Economy and productions

The predominant economy in Polesine is agricultural, especially the production of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. If you want to taste typical and delicious products, you cannot miss the festival of Saint James the Great, which takes place during the month of July and offers gastronomic delicacies of the territory.

I hope to have made you better acquainted with this beautiful hamlet of Pegognaga. Come and discover its history and beauty, you will be surprised!
