Discover Pedivigliano, the small town in Calabria

Welcome to Pedivigliano, a small town in the province of Cosenza in Calabria, with a population of about 773 residents. Let's discover together the characteristics of the territory and its fascinating history.

Physical geography

Pedivigliano: a small town between history and nature.

Territory

Pedivigliano is located in the inland of Calabria and stretches along one of the slopes of the Savuto river, the third longest river in the region, which rises from the Sila plateau. The landscape is dotted with deciduous forests, especially chestnut and oak trees, where various types of mushrooms are produced during spring and autumn, which are then processed in small artisanal workshops.

Crop cultivation is limited due to the rugged terrain, but Olea europaea is produced in the lower areas due to the positive influence of the sea. The view from Pedivigliano is unique: the town is perfectly aligned with an opening in the Calabrian coastal range in the direction of the volcanic island of Stromboli.

The territory is characterized by a breathtaking landscape, with the possibility of directly seeing a stretch of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, on clear days, to admire the volcanic cone of the island. Furthermore, the sea is easily reachable, just twenty minutes away from the nearest locations.

Climate

The climate in Pedivigliano is temperate and pleasant, thanks to the presence of widespread natural ventilation. However, due to the high variation in altitude of the territory, in just a few kilometers one can go from the of Pedivigliano to the of the Borboruso plateau. Snowfall is quite frequent in winter, typically associated with Balkan-origin disturbances.

History

Origins of Pedivigliano

The birth of the town of Pedivigliano dates back to the first half of the 16th century, when some settlers moved here from nearby territories. The name of the locality seems to derive from the fact that it stands "at the foot" of the pre-existing town of Villanova, whose origins date back to the medieval era.

The historic village of Pittarella

Presumably, during the same period, the fraction of Pittarella was founded, widely known for the presence of alleged fortune-tellers ("magare" in the local dialect), which represents an important legacy of the medieval era.

Borboruso and its foundation

The fraction of Borboruso is instead of more recent construction, having been founded in the second half of the 19th century.

Conclusions

In general, Pedivigliano is a place with a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, immersed in the nature and history of Calabria. If you want to discover a corner of Italy that is not too well-known but at the same time fascinating, do not hesitate to visit this small town.
