Pedaso
Pedaso: a town on the Adriatic coast
Pedaso is an Italian municipality located in the province of Fermo, in the Marche region. With a population of 2,792 inhabitants, the town is located on the Adriatic coast, at the mouth of the Aso river, and is surrounded by a predominantly hilly area. From here, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the hills and take long walks at any time of the year. In autumn, blackberry picking is a popular activity among the locals.
The history of Pedaso
The history of Pedaso dates back to the time of the Greeks and Piceni, while the presence of the Romans is evidenced by the ruins found around the mouth of the Aso river and on its sides, as well as by the archaeological finds that come from the sea. Over the centuries, Pedaso has suffered numerous invasions, including barbarian ones, which forced the population to take refuge in the nearby hill known as "Monte Serrone". Subsequently, Pedaso became a Fermano castle on the coast, with the task of supervising the Adriatic and a tower that today, since 1877, serves as a lighthouse. At the end of the 18th century, due to the continuous collapses of the houses along "La Cupa", caused by the landslide nature of the hill, development began at the bottom, along the sea. In 1970, an explosion at the Perotti restaurant caused the death of eight people.
Monuments and places of interest
Pedaso offers various tourist attractions, including the Church of Santa Maria and San Pietro apostle, in neo-Gothic style, built between 1898 and 1920. This three-aisled church has a Latin cross architecture. The Church of Santa Maria and San Pietro, known as "la Chiesolina", was built from 1795 to 1797 on the ruins of the medieval church of Santa Croce. Its exterior presents a simple facade, while the interior is highly decorated, with a single nave. The lighthouse known as the Pedaso lighthouse was built in 1877 and is still functional. Since 1877, the lighthouse has been converted into a summer concert hall. In addition, there is an astronomical observatory located on Monte Serrone in Pedaso, with a powerful observation instrument.
Society in Pedaso
The demographic evolution of Pedaso has always been of great interest, since the origins of the town date back to the Greek and Piceni period. Today, Pedaso tries to preserve its identity by joining the project "Il lungomare dei cantautori" which celebrates various artists, dedicating them underpasses that lead to the beach.
Culture and events
Every year, on May 1st, Pedaso celebrates the workers' picnic on Monte Serrone, which inaugurates the beginning of the summer festivals. In addition, various events are organized, such as the "Festa del Marinaio" and the most famous "Festa di San Pietro". During this celebration, the statue of the patron saint is transported on a boat that blesses the living and deceased fishermen.
In conclusion, Pedaso is a small town on the Adriatic coast that hides many beauties, history, and legends, capable of offering tourists a unique experience and making the locals live moments of conviviality and celebration.
