Pavone Canavese

Pavone Canavese: a small Piedmontese town rich in history and places of interest

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to tell you about the small town of Pavone Canavese, located in the metropolitan city of Turin in Piedmont. Despite its only 3628 inhabitants, this village has a very ancient history and many places to visit.

To begin with, Pavone Canavese was founded by the Romans and its toponym comes from the word ''Pagus'', which means village or borough. The term ''pagone'', which indicates a large village, or ''podoascum'', which means marshy place used for grazing, is also mentioned. Despite the presence of the peacock on the municipal coat of arms, its origin has nothing to do with the bird, but rather with the history of the castle, as we will see later.

Monuments and places of interest

There is much to see in Pavone Canavese, especially if you are passionate about history and art. The most characteristic place is definitely the castle, dating back to the medieval period and expanded in the succeeding centuries. The castle was purchased in 1885 by the architect Alfredo d'Andrade and since then has been reserved as a private residence. It is not possible to visit the inside, but its grandeur can be admired from the outside.

Another interesting place to visit is the ricetto, a fortified structure dating back to the thirteenth century, equipped with walls and towers for the defense of the surrounding village. Inside the ricetto, it is possible to see ancient dwellings and a small museum.

Among the most important churches in Pavone Canavese are those of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, built in the nineteenth century in neoclassical style, and that of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, dating back to the seventeenth century and characterized by the presence of valuable frescoes and paintings. Also, not to be missed is the Church of San Rocco, a national monument of great historical and artistic interest, built between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.

If you love nature and outdoor itineraries, you can follow the natural and archaeological path of Paraj Auta, a protected area of the municipality of Pavone Canavese that houses various archaeological remains dating back to Roman times.

Finally, if you are passionate about history and architecture, you cannot miss the Alfredo d'Andrade Foundation, which is located in the castle itself and organizes exhibitions and cultural events.
