The city of Turin has a two-thousand-year history. It was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic people who gave the city its current name. In the 1st century BC, Turin became a Roman colony under the name of ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum.''

Turin is one of the Italian industrial hubs and is the third center of industrial production in the country, along with Milan and Genoa. It is also one of the major centers of art, tourism, science, and culture in the country. Moreover, the Italian automotive industry has its base in Turin and it is also an important center in publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, space sector (astronomy), industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Turin is famous for some of its culinary specialties such as vermouth, Gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee. It is also the birthplace of many symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world. In 2006, Turin hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games and in 2022, the city hosted Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
