In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. Since 1720, it has been the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia until its unification with the Kingdom of Piedmont to form the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, when Turin became the first capital of the new state.

Turin is located in the plain bordered by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po, and facing the mouth of some Alpine valleys: Val di Susa, which connects the city with nearby France through the Frejus tunnels, Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone.

Turin is one of the Italian industrial hubs and is the third center of industrial production in the country, along with Milan and Genoa. It is also one of the major centers of art, tourism, science, and culture in the country. Turin is famous for some of its culinary specialties such as vermouth, Gianduiotti, grissini, and espresso coffee. It is also the birthplace of many symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world. In 2006, Turin hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games and in 2022, the city hosted Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
