Patti

Welcome to Patti, a historical and cultural city in Sicily

Patti is a municipality located in the center of the Gulf of Patti, in the metropolitan city of Messina, Sicily. With its inhabitants, it is the fifth most populous municipality in the city of Messina, and offers many opportunities for administrative areas, public services, institutions, and cultural entertainment. Patti is also the episcopal seat of the diocese of Patti, one of the oldest in Sicily. The municipality is part of the Inter-municipal Consortium of Tindari-Nebrodi. Let's discover together the origin of the city and its millennial history.

Origin of the name

The name Patti would derive from the Greek and means "by the waters." Recent archaeological excavations and essential studies have made it possible to locate the origin of the city in a period ranging from the 15th to the 8th century BC.

Patti: history and culture in Sicily

History

The first historical records that mention Patti date back to 1094, when Roger I of Sicily founded the Benedictine monastery of SS. Salvatore. The population of Patti subsequently increased thanks to the presence of the exiles from Tindari, who moved after a series of landslides and calamitous events. A necropolis has recently been discovered at Grotticelle which suggests the presence of a first settlement around the 8th-15th century BC, and the discovery of other artifacts of Hellenic origin suggests the existence of a port settlement in the navigable mouth of the Timetus of the Romans.

Patti has suffered many negative consequences due to the many destructions caused by conquerors and pirates and the many earthquakes that have struck eastern Sicily over the centuries.

The city has a structure in which the historic center is developed on two hills, around the Cathedral and the Alagonese Castle, to which are added the Episcopal Palace, the seminar, and the other historic buildings. The historic center then degrades towards the coast and the fishing village of Marina di Patti.

Come and visit this beautiful municipality where history and culture merge to offer an unforgettable experience.
