Paterno Calabro

Discovering Paterno Calabro

Hi friends, today I'll tell you about Paterno Calabro, a small municipality located in the province of Cosenza. With only 1338 inhabitants, the town occupies a altimetric surface that ranges from 449 to 1194 meters above sea level, and is located near the Serre Cosentine.

Its history

The symbol of the municipality is a coat of arms and a gonfalon, both granted by the President of the Republic in 1973, which stands out for its white and blue colors.

Paterno Calabro: between history, art and religion

Monuments and places of interest

Famous all over the world is the Sanctuary of San Francesco di Paola, founded in 1444 by the famous saint of the same name and probably completed in 1477. Here he stayed for a long time and from here he left on February 2, 1483, towards France to obey the order of Pope Sixtus IV and to help the sick King Louis XI. He never returned to Italy and died in Tours, where he lived until April 2, 1507.

The Sanctuary is composed of the church, the convent, the oratory, the cloister and the penance grotto. It is located 683 meters above sea level.

The cloister is composed of six stylized arches that rest on columns and wind through the corridors. On the left side there are 31 lunettes representing crucial moments of the saint's life, while on the right side there are busts of the Minim monks who lived in the seventeenth century.

Society

The demographic evolution of Paterno Calabro in the last 20 years shows a consistent decrease in the population, which has gone from 1563 inhabitants in 1997 to today's 1338.

Administration

At the moment, the administration of the municipality does not currently appear to be the subject of any particular news.

Notes and bibliography

For those curious about the history of San Francesco di Paola, I suggest reading the book "San Francesco di Paola a Paterno" by Father Francesco Rubino.
