Pastorano: history and culture of a Campanian municipality.

History

Pastorano has a millenary history. In the third century, following the agrarian and economic crisis that affected the entire Roman Empire and the southern regions of Italy in particular, the settlement began to welcome most of the inhabitants of the dissolved Cales and ancient Capua. The city has preserved the signs of its medieval origin in the fractions of San Secondino and Pantuliano. The territory of Pastorano belonged to the vast agro caleno, which included other municipalities such as Calvi Risorta and Sparanise.

Treaty of Casalanza

The Treaty of Casalanza was one of the most important episodes in the history of the Municipality of Pastorano. It was signed on May 20, 1815, between the Austrian army and the Neapolitan army of Gioacchino Murat, defeated in the Battle of Tolentino. The treaty put an end to the Napoleonic decade in the kingdom, which Emperor Francis II of Habsburg-Lorraine returned to ally Ferdinand IV of Bourbon. The convention was signed, for the Murattians, by Pietro Colletta, plenipotentiary of the commander-in-chief Michele Carascosa, and was signed in the house of the barons Lanza di Capua.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The church of San Secondino is one of the oldest places of worship in the area. Its original structure dates back to the second half of the 12th century and was originally a small chapel of Purgatory. Over the centuries it has undergone numerous interventions of renovation and transformation until it assumed the current church layout. The sanctuary of Pantuliano is another point of interest that attracts many tourists every year.

Church of San Secondino

The layout of the church of San Secondino has undergone various renovations in different eras. However, the current construction is the result of the reconstruction that took place in 1927, following a fire that had devastated the church. It preserves valuable works of art from the eighteenth century inside and collects important testimonies of history and tradition of the area.

Sanctuary of Pantuliano

The Sanctuary of Pantuliano is dedicated to the beginning of Christianity in the area. The structure was an ancient monastery of the Franciscan friars and has been restored with great and long work. Today it has been transformed into a Marian Sanctuary, as there is the image of the Madonna with the Child. The cult of the Madonna of Pantuliano is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year.

In summary, Pastorano is a municipality rich in history and culture. Over the centuries it has collected many influences at the architectural, cultural, and artistic levels, making it a fascinating and suggestive place. Visiting this municipality is an experience not to be missed to discover the beauty of Campania and to learn something about the traditions and history of Italy.
