Passirano: a municipality in the renowned wine region of Franciacorta
Hello friends, today we will talk about Passirano, an Italian municipality with 6865 inhabitants located in the province of Brescia, Lombardy. Not only is it part of the renowned wine region of Franciacorta, but it also has a very interesting history with monuments and places of interest to visit.
Physical Geography
Passirano is located in the Po Valley and has a temperate climate. The municipal territory also includes the hamlet of Monterotondo and in 1930 the hamlet of Camignone was added.
History
Passirano has medieval origins and developed around the castles of Passirano Mattina and Passirano Sera, which were part of the Passirani fiefs. In 1479, the inhabitants of the two centers offered land to the Servants of Mary for the construction of the Sanctuary of San Rocco, which was halfway between the two villages.
In the seventeenth century, the friars abandoned the convent, which was transformed into the parish church of San Zenone bishop. Over the years, new houses developed around the sanctuary and the two centers merged. At the end of the nineteenth century, the municipal territory of Passirano was expanded.
Symbols
The coat of arms of Passirano was recognized by decree of the head of the Government on August 11, 1933, and the flag, granted by decree of the President of the Republic on December 29, 1995, is a yellow banner.
Monuments and places of interest
If you go to Passirano, you can't miss the Castle of Passirano Sera, built between the tenth and fourteenth centuries to provide a refuge for the inhabitants of the area in case of attack. The castle has high and massive walls of irregular blocks of Sarnico stone and outside there are two semicircular towers. In the surroundings of the castle there are also Villa Fassati built in the eighteenth century and Villa la Tesea from the sixteenth century.
Another place of interest is the Church of San Zenone, which was built in the seventeenth century on the pre-existing sanctuary of San Rocco. Inside there are works by local painters, such as Antonio Guadagnini and Sante Cattaneo.
