The history of Partinico
The origins
The plain of Partinico has been frequented by man since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the numerous lithic tools preserved in the city's Civic Museum. In protohistoric times, some kingdoms flourished, including the Sicani, with the cities of Inico, Camico, Krastos, and Iccara representing real treasures of Italian history. Partinico as such, was first mentioned during the reign of Caracalla, in the third century AD, in a document called the Antonine Itinerary. It seems that the name derives from "Pars Iniqua," a decidedly unflattering epithet that a friar gave to the city once he arrived there. However, over time, it came to be called Parthenicum, until reaching the current name of Partinico.
The Arab era
During the Arab domination period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, Partinico maintained its ancient place names such as Inico and Camico. In documents of the time, the city is referred to as B.RT.NIQ, which in Arabic indicated Partinico as the "land" of Inico. In Al Muqaddasi's work of 988, entitled "Ahan'at Tagasim," there are writings that speak of the inhabitants of Partinico who "do not lie on the sea and produce a lot of henna," although it is not known what kind of product is being referred to.
The Norman era
During the Norman period, between the 11th and 12th centuries, Partinico is always referred to as "B.rt.niq," and the city is referred to as a "graceful land." In 1154, Mohammed al-Idrisi described the fortress of the city and a port two miles to the south.
