Parona

Welcome to Parona, Lombardy

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about Parona, a municipality in the province of Pavia, located in northern Lomellina, in the plain between the Agogna and Terdoppio rivers. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to spend a few days, Parona might be your perfect choice. Let's discover together the history, culture and peculiarities of this fascinating place.

The history of Parona

Like many other Italian municipalities, Parona also has a long history to tell. Belonging in the Middle Ages to the Contado di Lomello, it was definitively assigned to Pavia in 1164, with a diploma from Frederick Barbarossa. Later, it became a lordship of the Tornielli family, who for centuries were the major property owners in the municipality, regularly enfeoffed in the Visconti era. Later, the Visconti Borromeo were feudal lords of Parona, and from 1651 the Stampa of Milan, due to the marriage of Anna Visconti and Girolamo Stampa. Finally, the fief was inherited by their daughter Camilla and passed to her husband Filippo Archinto, who in 1707 was named Marquis of Parona. In 1713 Parona, together with all of Lomellina, passed under the rule of the House of Savoy, and in 1859 it was included in the province of Pavia.

The culture of Parona

One of the great treasures of Parona is definitely its cuisine, known especially for the typical biscuit "Offella di Parona". The recipe for the dessert, invented at the end of the 19th century, is now jealously guarded and will always be kept secret. Since 1969, every year on the first Sunday of October, the Offella is the protagonist of a festival with musical performances, a funfair and a parade of floats. There are many variations and different recipes, as there are multiple companies that produce them. However, one thing is certain: the Offella di Parona is truly unique in the world and binds an entire village thanks to its tradition.

Parona is conveniently connected to Milan by the Parona railway station, located on the Milan-Mortara railway.

Regarding sports, Parona is represented in basketball by the team "Blue Eagles", playing in the first division of the province of Pavia in 2013/2014.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Parona is a quiet and relaxing place, immersed in nature and history. If you are looking for an escape from the city and want to try the flavors of Italian culinary tradition, you can't miss a visit to this Italian municipality. I particularly recommend trying the Offella di Parona, which will make you fall in love with this wonderful municipality.
