History

The history of Corcagnano dates back to the Bronze Age when the area was already inhabited by humans. Over the centuries, numerous rural settlements were built, traces of which are still visible in the subdivision of the territory, which still follows the ancient centuriation.

In the Middle Ages, the original Church of Santa Lucia was built, belonging to the Benedictines of the Abbey of San Giovanni Evangelista in Parma. The church was first mentioned in a papal bull in 1145. In the fifteenth century, Corcagnano, together with neighboring areas such as Carignano, Vigatto, and Alberi, belonged to the Rossi of Parma. During the clashes with Ottobuono de' Terzi, in 1403 the villages were raided by his troops and taken away from the Rossi domain.

In 1806, due to Napoleon's decrees, the locality became part of the new municipality of Vigatto. In the XX century, Corcagnano was at the center of the food preservation industry, hosting some important factories, including that of the famous entrepreneur Giovanni Guidorossi. In 1943, following the annexation of Parma, Corcagnano was united with this municipality. Following strong protests from the inhabitants, the hamlet was re-established in 1951, until it became an autonomous district in 1962.
