Parete

Parete, the Story

Hello everyone! Today we're talking about Parete, a small town in Campania with just under 12,000 inhabitants located in the province of Caserta. If you're interested in discovering the history of this place and its most important monuments, you're in the right place!

Parete has an ancient history, linked to the first Oscan populations who inhabited the territory of Liburia. It is said that the town could have been a center of considerable historical importance if some tombs built by the Oscans in pre-Roman times had not been looted and destroyed by unknown persons in the early 1970s.

The town was located at the crossroads of the ancient Via Campana and the Via Antica, which led to the colony of Liternum, on Lake Patria. In feudal times, the village reached the rank of Duchy and was owned by various noble families of the kingdom of Naples, including the Caracciolo, Coscia and Moles.

An important testimony of that period is the Ducal Palace, which was originally a military tower before becoming a noble residence. Today, it still represents the testimony of a flourishing period of the territory.

Agriculture and the Strawberry Museum

Since ancient times, the local landscape has been marked by the dominance of agriculture, thanks to the fertile soil. Today, however, the territory is threatened by the erosion of agricultural spaces, due to residential land use planning.

However, in recent times, there has been an attempt to enhance the economy of the territory specifically through the primary sector. In particular, in 2017, the Strawberry Museum was inaugurated, the first of its kind in Italy. The museum is located inside the Ducal Palace, after a long and careful restoration.

The Monuments of Parete

The Church of San Pietro Apostolo

The Church of San Pietro Apostolo is one of the most important monuments in Parete. It was built on the site previously occupied by another place of worship dating back to the early days of Christianity and is dedicated to the patron saint of the town. The current Latin cross layout features a Romanesque style typical of the period between 1100 and 1250.

City Title

Finally, I would like to point out that Parete was granted the title of City in 1985, thanks to a decree of the President of the Italian Republic.

And this concludes our journey to discover Parete. We have seen how this Campanian town has an ancient history, linked to the first Oscan populations who inhabited the area. Furthermore, we have explored how agriculture has been a driving force behind the territory and how the town is trying to enhance this important sector of the economy. Finally, we discovered that Parete was granted the recognition of City in 1985. Thanks for joining us on this brief visit!
