The history of Palmas Arborea dates back to the Nuragic period, as a Nuraghe can still be admired in the area today. In the Middle Ages, Palmas Arborea belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea and was part of the curatoria of Simaxis. At the fall of the giudicato in 1420, the municipality was included in the Marchesato of Oristano and from 1478 came under Aragonese rule. Over the centuries, the village has seen its importance decrease, until in 1767 it was incorporated into the marchesato d'Arcais. It was only in 1839 that Palmas Arborea was redeemed from the feudal system and became a municipality in its own right.
