Palazzo Pignano
Palazzo Pignano: history and curiosities of a town in Cremona
Palazzo Pignano is an Italian town in the province of Cremona, in Lombardy, with a population of about 3771 inhabitants. Although it is a small village, it has a very ancient history, dating back to the Roman era, as shown by the numerous archaeological evidence found in the area.
History
Origins
Palazzo is a settlement with very ancient origins, dating back at least to the 5th century AD. According to some archaeological excavations, it could have even been inhabited during the period of the Roman city of Parasso, in the 4th century, from which its name may derive.
Middle Ages
The history of the town is marked by two destructions, the first around 951 and the second around the mid-11th century. After these catastrophes, the city was rebuilt in 1155. In the 12th century, it came under the control of the Municipality of Crema, which granted it in fiefdom to the local Lords in the following centuries. Around the mid-15th century, it came under the domination of Venice, until 1797.
Modern and contemporary age
In the Napoleonic era, from 1809 to 1816, Palazzo was a fraction of Scannabue, and then regained autonomy with the establishment of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom. In 1862, the municipality changed its name to "Palazzo Pugnano", which was then changed to "Palazzo Pignano" the following year. In 1929, the two suppressed municipalities of Cascine Gandini and Scannabue were merged into the municipality of Palazzo Pignano.
