Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Palazzago, a town in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy. Palazzago has about 4502 inhabitants and is located in the beautiful Valle Imagna.
Physical geography
Palazzago is crossed by the Borgogna stream, a waterway that makes the village very picturesque. The surrounding mountains offer breathtaking views, making this place ideal for those who want to enjoy nature.
Origin of the name
The name Palazzago comes from the term "palatius" which, over time, was changed to "palatiacus" and finally to "palazzagum". The place name was already known in Roman times, but became particularly important during the domination of the Lombards.
History
Palazzago has a fascinating history that begins in Roman times. During the imperial era, the town exploited its strategic position on the road that connected Bergamo to Como, becoming an important military and commercial crossroads.
Subsequently, the area was subject to the Lombards, included in the duchy of Bergamo. During the Middle Ages, Palazzago was at the center of numerous disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines, which culminated in the construction of numerous fortified buildings.
Later, the town came under the control of the Visconti family of Milan, but peace only returned with the arrival of the Republic of Venice. After the Venetian domination, Palazzago was included in the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom, managed by the Austrians. In 1849, the inhabitants of the village rebelled against the imperial soldiers, in the so-called "guerrilla of Palazzago".
Symbols
The coat of arms of Palazzago was approved in 1964 and depicts a sword, two flames, and an olive branch. The sword and flames symbolize the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, while the olive branch recalls the peace between the factions.
