Partino: a hamlet in Tuscany

Physical geography

The village of Partino is located in Valdera along the sandy crest of a tuff hill, between Palaia and Villa Saletta. The peculiar soil of this area is described as "miraculous" thanks to its ferruginous appearance and the presence of copper. The distance from the municipal capital is a little over 2 km, while from Pisa it is about 42 km.

History

Partino was born as a castle in the Early Middle Ages, and already from 1260 it was documented as a center where some possessions of the diocese of Lucca were present. In 1551, the hamlet had 238 inhabitants, which increased to 506 in 1840.

Monuments and places of interest

Among the beauties of Partino, we find the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the parish church of the hamlet. The church was mentioned in the catalogs of the diocese of Lucca already from 1260, and is still part of the diocese of San Miniato. A document dated December 30, 1412 informs us that the rector of the church at that time was the priest Jacopo di Giovanni. The parish has about 250 inhabitants.
