Ozzano Monferrato: history, symbols and monuments in Piedmont

Physical Geography

Territory

Ozzano Monferrato is located in a hilly area along the road that connects Casale Monferrato to Asti. The historic center extends on the southern slope of the hill, at the foot of the ancient castle and the parish church of San Salvatore. Lavello, on the other hand, is the inhabited nucleus on the flat territory, along the Casale-Asti state road, which saw its expansion in the nineteenth century thanks to the industrialization linked to the extraction and processing of lime and cement. The ancient village of Ozzano Monferrato has preserved its historical and cultural characteristics, making it one of the most artistically and architecturally rich towns in the entire Casalese Monferrato area. There are many villas and private residences of particular architectural value with splendid related parks. It is also possible to see many industrial archaeology emergencies on this territory.

History

Symbols

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of the municipality of Ozzano Monferrato were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on May 30, 1953.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Parish Church of San Salvatore

The parish church of San Salvatore dominates the roofs of the village from above, just below the park and the suspended gardens of the ancient castle. Since 1911, it has been considered a valuable work of art by the superintendent. The papal bull of Pope Innocent II from 1143 is the first known historical document in which the presence of ecclesiastical buildings in the territory of Ozzano Monferrato is mentioned. However, the current structure dates back to 1300, with several internal modifications that have enriched its aesthetic appearance. The church is historically linked to the diocese of Vercelli, but in 1474 it came under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Casale Monferrato.

Castle of Ozzano Monferrato

The castle of Ozzano Monferrato was built in the thirteenth century. Over time, the structure has been restored and expanded to include a prison and an inner courtyard. In 1786, the castle underwent another renovation, but today it stands as a beautiful villa of eclectic style.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Ozzano Monferrato is a municipality that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, as an integral part of the Piedmontese wine landscapes: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. It is one of the most artistically and architecturally rich towns in the entire Casalese Monferrato area. The parish church of San Salvatore and the castle of Ozzano Monferrato are just a couple of the many historical and artistic masterpieces that this city offers to tourists, as well as the industrial archaeology emergencies and the villas and private residences of particular architectural value.
