Discovering Turin

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Turin, a beautiful city located in the Piedmont region. With its 842,472 inhabitants, Turin is the fourth largest Italian municipality by population.

Physical geography

The territory of Turin is located in the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po rivers. The city is located at the mouth of some alpine valleys, such as the Val di Susa, the Valli di Lanzo and the Val Sangone. Thanks to its location, Turin is a city rich in natural beauty, with beautiful mountain landscapes nearby.

Exploring Turin: history, culture and food&wine.

History

Turin has a two-thousand-year history, probably founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini. Later, the city was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC, and after the Ostrogoth domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin. In the 11th century, it passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy and from 1563 became the capital of the homonymous duchy. In 1720 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) and then, from 1861 to 1865, the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.

Economy and tourism

Turin is one of the most important cities in Italy for the economy, industrial production, university, art, tourism, science, and culture. It is the center of the Italian automotive industry, as well as an important center of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, food and wine, the aerospace sector, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Tourism in Turin is also very developed thanks to the presence of many cultural sites such as the Savoy palaces in Piedmont and the Po hills that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. In addition, in 2006 the city hosted the XX Winter Olympic Games and in 2022 the Eurovision Song Contest.
