Clavais

Clavais: a historic village in Carnia

Clavais is a picturesque village in the municipality of Ovaro, in the province of Udine, located at an altitude of 827 meters on the slopes of Monte Zoncolan. The name Clavais has undergone several changes over the centuries, but it is believed to derive from the numerous "cleve" (undulations of the terrain) present in the area. Today, the village, with its stone architecture and "carnico" type tiled roofs, retains its original urban layout and is one of the most suggestive places in Val Degano.

Description of the village and the Church of San Lorenzo Martire

Clavais is three kilometers from Ovaro and can be reached both by the road that starts from the capital and by the road that connects the municipalities of Comeglians and Ovaro. The village is located near a large expanse of agricultural and uncultivated land and has been primarily a center for agro-silvo-pastoral activities. Today, many old houses and former stables and barns have been renovated to maintain the original architectural appearance of the village; new buildings have also been constructed, but the characteristic urban layout has always been preserved. In the village there is the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, dating back to the Middle Ages and renovated in 1999-2000. An important event is held on the weekend closest to the day of San Lorenzo (August 10), when the traditional village festival is held.

The Clavajas Cultural Association

The Clavajas Cultural Association was founded with the aim of keeping the traditions of the village alive and bringing together the few inhabitants of the village. Founded in 2007, the non-recognized, non-profit association has grown to count over 90 members and organize around ten events per year. After the closure of the last tavern in the village, the association has become the only point of reference for the village, organizing the traditional San Lorenzo festival and other events.

A village with a spectacular panoramic view

Clavais offers a panoramic view of Val Degano, the villages of the Municipality of Ovaro, such as Ovasta, Mione, Luint and Agrons, Val Pesarina and the peaks of the Carnic Alps, such as Coglians, Volaia Mountains and the Pesarine Dolomites. It is an ideal place for excursions and to enjoy the unspoiled nature of Carnia.

In summary, Clavais is a charming place in the heart of Carnia, which has been able to preserve its cultural identity and natural beauty. The Clavajas Cultural Association, with its work to keep the village's traditions alive, is the beating heart of a proud community and its history.
