Ovaro: Alpine pearl of Carnia

History

Ovaro has an ancient and fascinating history, with roots dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological sites have been found in the area, which testify to human presence dating back to the 6th century BC.

During the Roman occupation, Ovaro became part of Roman domains like the rest of Carnia, and in the late antique period, settlement of the area intensified.

The name "Ovaro" seems to derive from the fusion of the Latin word "Ovis" (sheep) with the Celtic expression "ro chi" (bring back). This gave rise to the word "Ovirochi," which over time became "Ovaroch" and finally "Ovaro."

Art and culture

Ovaro is a treasure trove of art and culture, which can be appreciated by walking through its streets and squares. One of the most impressive places is the Paleochristian complex of San Martino, dating back to the 4th century AD.

With its approximately 400 m², this basilical building is one of the largest of its kind. Near the medieval church of San Martino, an octagonal baptistery was also found in front of the basilica. The complex features characteristics of Aquileia-Alpine sacred architecture, with a hexagonal baptismal font, a presbyterial bench, and a triple apse.

Glorious medieval period

During the Middle Ages, Ovaro followed the historical events of the rest of Friuli, under the temporal and spiritual dominion of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, Feudalism of the Holy Roman Empire.

Under the patriarchs of Aquileia, the power of the de Luincis family, who were "gesmani," or ministerial feudatories, of the Aquileia church, was established.
