Ottobiano
Ottobiano: a town between history and nature
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Ottobiano, an Italian municipality located in the province of Pavia, Lombardy. Ottobiano is a charming place that extends at the center of Lomellina, in the Po Valley.
Geography
Ottobiano is crossed by the Arbogna stream, a tributary of the Agogna river, and is surrounded by greenery. It is about 32 km away from Pavia, 60 km from Milan, and 21 km from Vigevano. Its location makes it easily accessible, but at the same time isolated from modern times, making it a place where nature reigns supreme. If you are looking for a place to unwind and be in touch with nature, Ottobiano is the perfect place for you.
History
The history of Ottobiano dates back to the Roman era. In fact, the name of the village appears in the Middle Ages as ''Octabianum,'' which might derive from a "fundus" or "praedium Octavianum," a farmstead belonging to the Octavia gens, the same as the Emperor Augustus. Over the centuries, Ottobiano changed several owners, from the Beccaria family to the noble Milanese family Birago. In 1713 it passed to the Savoy House, and in 1859 it became part of the province of Pavia.
Monuments and places of interest
Despite its historical past, Ottobiano does not have many historical monuments. However, it is a municipality rich in nature and interesting places. Traces of the Roman era have been found in the municipal territory, such as the Necropolis of Rotorta, dating back to the period between 50 BC and 100 AD. In addition, two terracotta jars containing imperial Roman coins with effigies of emperors from Augustus to Philip the Arab were found.
Another point of interest is the Ossuary of the Church of San Rocco, which is partially destroyed today, but testifies to the presence of civilizations in the area since the time of the ancient Romans. Finally, Ottobiano is also a perfect place for hiking and walking lovers, thanks to its natural landscapes that leave you breathless.
Society and infrastructure
Ottobiano, with its just over one thousand inhabitants, is a small municipality where life proceeds quietly, far from the chaos of big cities. Its economy is mainly based on agriculture and tourism sectors, thanks to its strategic position at the heart of Lomellina's nature.
Demographic evolution
In recent years, Ottobiano has seen a slight increase in population, also thanks to investments to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. However, it remains a peaceful and human-sized place, where everyone knows each other and helps each other.
Infrastructure and transport
Ottobiano is easily reachable by car, thanks to the roads connecting it to Pavia, Milan, and Vigevano. In the past, it was an important communication hub thanks to the tramway station shared by the Mortara-Ottobiano-Pieve del Cairo and Novara-Vigevano-Ottobiano lines. Unfortunately, these lines are no longer active today.
In conclusion, Ottobiano is a place where nature and history blend to create a unique and evocative atmosphere. If you want to unwind and be in touch with nature, this is the right place for you!
