Precisely from this historical assumption, Ottati's name derives, which from the Latin, "optatus," indicates that the shepherds opted for this place well-suited for pastoralism. In the thirteenth century, Ottati was the fiefdom of Capece Galeota, later property of numerous noble families. It rose from the ruins to which Frederick II of Swabia reduced it, and in the 1700s, the village belonged to the powerful family of Caraguso-Mariconda.

The coat of arms and banner of Ottati were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 18, 2020. The banner is a cloth divided into sky blue and white.
