Ottati: A Place Immersed in Nature

If you are looking for a place immersed in nature where you can relax and enjoy stunning landscapes, the town of Ottati could be the right destination for you. This location is situated in the north-eastern part of Cilento, in the province of Salerno, Campania, and is part of the natural context of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park. This territory represents an oasis of peace, and contact with nature is the focal point of the experience, thanks to the spectacular views offered by the Alburni Mountains and the numerous caves inhabited by the Basilian monks.

The History of Ottati

Ottati was founded in the year 1100, although some historians argue that the first dwellings of the center arose around the year 1000. Probably, a large number of shepherds and herdsmen had built some houses over time, which, increasing in number, gave rise to the first inhabited center. Precisely from this historical assumption, Ottati's name derives, which from the Latin, "optatus," indicates that the shepherds opted for this place well-suited for pastoralism. In the thirteenth century, Ottati was the fiefdom of Capece Galeota, later property of numerous noble families. It rose from the ruins to which Frederick II of Swabia reduced it, and in the 1700s, the village belonged to the powerful family of Caraguso-Mariconda.
