Ostra Vetere
Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the town of Ostra Vetere, located in the beautiful region of Marche, Italy. It is a relatively small municipality, with a population of 3,123 inhabitants, but despite its size, it offers many interesting places to visit!
Physical Geography
Ostra Vetere is located in a hilly area of Marche and if you look from the upper part of the town, you can also enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea towards Senigallia. Unfortunately, there are no flat areas, but the hills still offer a spectacular view!
History
Ostra Vetere has a long history dating back to the 12th century! It was formerly called Montenovo, but in March 1882, it changed its name thanks to a royal decree. You can find the ruins of ancient Ostra in the area of "Le Muracce" of Pongelli, where archaeologists are currently conducting research and studies. Many popular stories claim that the town was founded by refugees from the ancient Roman city of Ostra who escaped the destruction of the city by the Goths in 409 AD. But the real history of Ostra Vetere is much more complex and interesting!
Only the existence of a monastic cell dedicated to San Severo has been documented in the territory, near the hill where the urban center stands today. In the surrounding areas, the castles of Quinzano and Collina were mentioned in 1081 and 1115. Only at the beginning of the 13th century, Montenovo will establish itself as a free municipality and in 1230 the mayor of the community appears as a guarantor in an act of internal pacification of the neighboring Montalboddo. From here on, the history of the town is linked to that of the noble families of the area, such as the Boscareto and the Spinelli.
Symbols
The flag of Ostra Vetere is very characteristic: a yellow drape with the town logo in the center.
Monuments and Places of Interest
There are many beautiful places to visit in Ostra Vetere, but my favorites are:
- the ruins of ancient Ostra: not only a place of great historical importance, but also very evocative
- the civic-parochial museum Maria Crocefisso Satellico: this museum contains numerous works of art, including a San Benedetto cross dating back to the 12th century
- the Church of Santa Maria della Piazza: a religious building with an imposing appearance and a bell tower that is 65 meters high
- the Convent of Santa Croce, now the sanctuary of San Pasquale Baylon: not only a place of worship, but also one of the most beautiful architectural structures in the area
- Palazzo Buti: a historic building dating back to the 14th century, famous for its high tower.
