Ostra
Hello friends, I want to talk to you about Ostra Vetere, an Italian municipality located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. The city is located in a hilly area and has no plains, but from the high part you can admire a beautiful view of the sea towards Senigallia.
History
The city assumed its current name on March 19, 1882, but was previously known as Montenovo. The first evidence of this place name dates back to the twelfth century. In the area of "Le Muracce" of Pongelli, it is possible to find the ruins of ancient Ostra, whose archaeological site is currently under investigation.
According to popular tradition, Ostra Vetere was founded by refugees from the ancient Roman city of Ostra, who fled the city destroyed by the Goths in 409 AD. However, until the twelfth century, the territory was inhabited only by a monastic cell dedicated to San Severo and the castles of Quinzano and Collina. The place name "Serra Montis Novi" appears for the first time on a document of the Abbey of Sitria in 1137, and only at the beginning of the thirteenth century did Montenovo establish itself as a free municipality.
In 1230, the mayor of the municipality appeared as a guarantor in an internal pacification act of nearby Montalboddo. After a phase of expansion, the city suffered several destructions, including the castle destroyed by Albornoz in 1360, the reconstruction and expansion carried out by Nicolò Spinelli in 1362, the damage caused by Francesco Sforza soldiers in 1443, the abuses of Francesco Maria della Rovere in 1517 and the sack by Spanish mercenaries led by Nicolò Bonafede in 1522.
The city then lived a history similar to that of the rural centers of the Marca Anconitana and the Papal State, until the dispute with Montalboddo over the claim of the ancient name of Ostra. In 1882, a royal decree attributed the name of Ostra Vetere to Montenovo.
