History

From Roman times to the Middle Ages

The first evidence of Ossona's history dates back to the 1st century BC, with the discovery of a Celtic cremation burial in the late 1950s. In 1213, the municipality was mentioned in a notarial deed as the homeland of a man named Pietro, a witness in a sale. Also in the same century, thanks to the chronicle of Goffredo da Bussero, we learn that the parish of Ossona was under the jurisdiction of the Pieve of Corbetta.

In the fifteenth century, Giovanni da Ossona was the mayor and captain of the Ambrosian Republic for three years.

The Feudation

The economy of Ossona was based on agriculture, and poverty was widespread. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the municipality was hit by several epidemics. At the end of the seventeenth century, due to continuing financial difficulties, the inhabitants decided to "auction off" their independence in order to find a buyer who would feudalize them. In 1650, the Marquis Vercellino Maria Visconti acquired the feud of Ossona for 2360 lire. Ossona's history became indissolubly linked to that of the Visconti family until 1794 when, upon the death of the last heir of the family, Giuseppe Maria, the feud returned to the state of Milan.

The Nineteenth Century: Twice a Municipality, Twice a Frazione

In 1786, the municipality of Ossona was included in the Province of Pavia (Austrian Lombardy). With the arrival of Napoleon in Milan in 1796 and the reorganization of the Milanese state, Ossona was annexed to the Department of Ticino with the capital in Pavia. In 1798, the municipality was placed under Milan's administration.

Ossona is a municipality with a rich and fascinating history. With its very low seismicity, Ossona offers a peaceful setting for families seeking a more tranquil life.
