Cadrezzate with Osmate: a charming destination
Cadrezzate with Osmate is a municipality located in the province of Varese, Lombardy. The destination was formed in 2019 from the merger of the preexisting municipalities of Cadrezzate and Osmate. It is a territory that boasts a long history that dates back to prehistoric times. The presence of pile-dwelling settlements and Bronze Age artifacts attest to the fact that the area was inhabited in remote times.
The History of Cadrezzate and Osmate
One of the most significant findings are the monosyllabic boats discovered in 1971 and 1975 and preserved in the civic museum of Villa Mirabello in Varese. Furthermore, the area of Il Sabbione was included in 2011 on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List along with other ancient prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements in the Alps.
The Osmate community worshipped the pagan deity Oscio Mater, from which it also derived its name. With the conversion to Christianity, the first place of worship was erected, where the chaplain of Cadrezzate celebrated Mass.
Until the end of the 18th century, Osmate was part of the feud of the Marquises Litta Visconti Arese. Subsequently, in 1796, the abolition of all forms of feudal government led to the suppression of the Monastery of the Augustinian Nuns of the Sacred Mountain of Varese. The nuns found refuge at the parish of Osmate, but regained the convent with the return of the Austrian armies.
Monuments and Places of Interest
The municipal territory overlooks Lake Monate, one of the most beautiful lakes in the area and not far from the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, Lake Varese, and Lake Comabbio. The presence of these waters makes Cadrezzate with Osmate a destination particularly interested in beach tourism. In addition, Il Sabbione is located within the municipality, one of the 111 prehistoric pile-dwelling sites around the Alps, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
