The antiquity of Osio Sotto
In the Roman period, an important road that connected the city of Milan to Bergamo was present on this territory. From the city of Bergamo, the stretch of road that reached Osio was known as "via Osio", testifying to the importance of the Osio village. During that time, Osio Sotto experienced significant urban development thanks to the patrician family of the gens Otia (or gens Oxia), from which the name of the town originated.
The Middle Ages of Osio Sotto
With the end of the Roman Empire, the territory of Osio Sotto began to be depopulated due to barbarian invasions that made the place unsafe and dangerous. It was only with the arrival of the Lombards that the situation calmed down and intensified further with the advent of the Franks, who promoted the formation of the Holy Roman Empire, giving rise to feudalism.
During this historical period, Osio Sotto began to be mentioned in written documents of the IX and X centuries as "Osio subteriore". Until that moment, the territory was managed by the diocese of Bergamo and only later did important families begin to take an interest in this place, so much so as to oblige the population to build a castle as a last refuge in case of attack.
