San Lorenzo

The Valley of Mills: San Lorenzo di Osilo

San Lorenzo is a small Italian hamlet in the municipality of Osilo, located in the region of Sardinia, with a population of only 96 inhabitants. However, despite its small size, this small locality has a lot to offer. In fact, it is known as "The Valley of Mills" due to the presence of 36 water mills that were used as flour producers. Furthermore, the area has been inhabited since the Nuragic era and an ancient millstone was found near the site of San Lorenzo.

History

San Lorenzo extends over an area that boasts a long history. In the area there are Nuragic settlements and, more recently, the inhabitants began to build water mills for flour production. In the vicinity of the hamlet, a mining quarry was also discovered. In the mid-19th century, there were as many as 25 functioning water mills in the valley.

Monuments and places of interest

The natural beauty of the surrounding valley has led the inhabitants to build numerous mills, which have been partially made visitable in recent times. The fame of "The Valley of Mills" attracts many tourists every year. The San Lorenzo Municipal Mill has been renovated by the Municipality of Osilo and features completely restored gears. To visit it, it is necessary to contact the Cultural Association "Badde Lontana", which manages the mill. In addition, many local families have restored their mills and make them accessible to visitors, including the Pisano Mill, owned by the Pisano family, an example of how the milling industry of the past worked.

For art and archeology lovers, the hamlet houses the Church of San Lorenzo, dating back to the 16th century, with a valuable architecture.
