Corbara
Discovering Corbara
Hello everyone, today I want to take you on a journey of discovery to Corbara, a small hamlet of the municipality of Orvieto located in the province of Terni. Corbara is situated about 186 meters above sea level and overlooks the homonymous lake, which extends over the Tevere river. According to the Istat census data of 2001, only 123 people live in the hamlet, but don't be fooled by its small size: Corbara has a lot to offer!
History
The first anecdote that comes to mind when talking about Corbara concerns the noble family of Montemarte. In the early 13th century, the Todi family took possession of the Monte Marte castle, located on the right bank of the Tevere, near the exit from the Forello gorge. The Montemarte family, therefore, moved to Titignano, near Orvieto, and to Corbara, where they built a large fortified villa, still existing today. The family actively participated in the Orvietan political life and Francesco di Montemarte extensively documented the local events in the years from 1333 to 1400. Due to their loyalty to the territories of the Church, their estate underwent numerous sieges and pillages during the 14th and 15th centuries by the armies of Perugia and Tuderti.
Another important historical event for Corbara is the construction of the dam on the Tevere river in 1962, which formed a huge hydroelectric basin of 207 million cubic meters. The dam itself is a whopping 641 meters long, of which 416 are made of concrete and 225 of earth.
Economy
The economy of Corbara is mainly based on agriculture, with a particular focus on viticulture. The hamlet is also famous for its eno-gastronomic activities and the Lago di Corbara wine, a DOC established in 1998. If you are a lover of good food, you cannot miss out on the local typical dishes, which make Umbrian cuisine a true excellence!
Monuments and Artistic Places
In a hamlet like Corbara, monuments and artistic places cannot be missing. One of the most striking buildings is the Corbara castle, which dominates the village from above. Its imposing presence will leave you speechless! Not far away is the church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, a religious building with a truly unique architectural style. Finally, if you are passionate about archaeology, in Corbara you can visit the ruins of the Roman port of Pagliano, located at the confluence of the Paglia and Tevere rivers.
Sports
Corbara is the ideal place for those who love outdoor sports activities. If you are fond of fishing, you cannot miss the thrill of catching your fish on the banks of the Tevere river. If, on the other hand, you have a hunger for adventure, you can practice canyoning, caving, sport fishing, canoeing, and rowing. What are you waiting for? Come and discover the sports activities that Corbara has to offer!
