It is located at an altitude of 120 meters above sea level and is the most populous hamlet in the municipality, with 4,280 inhabitants, as reported in the 2001 Istat census.

The history of Ciconia is very ancient, and it is presumed that since Roman times the area was used as a military outpost to defend Orvieto. Later, in the Middle Ages, the castrum of Villa Ciconia was built, still defending Orvieto and the nearby town of Prodo.
