Discovering Orte, a town in Lazio
Hello friends! Today we will talk about Orte, a town in Lazio located in the province of Viterbo with a population of 8,969. Orte is an important road and railway junction located at the north-south and east-west crossroads of central Italy. In this text, we will talk about the territory, climate, and history of Orte.
Physical Geography
Territory
The territory of Orte is located in the Tiber Valley and is affected by secondary volcanic phenomena. There are several sulfur thermal waters such as those of Capannelle (which referred to the huts built over the water puddles); these were present until the construction of the Piscina, now turned into the Terme di Orte. The city is also rich in natural springs that were once an important resource for the community. Among the main springs in Orte, we find the Fontana Antica, Acqua del Galletto, Fonte Zelli, Acqua della Breccia, Fonte di Buci, and Fonte dell'Acqua Acetosa.
Climate
Orte has a D-type climate with classification 1935 GR/G.
Origin of the Name
The origin of the name Orte dates back to ancient legends of the migration of the Pelasgians, a wandering people who left the Peloponnese to settle in Thessaly and later in Italy. Some sources date back to the year 1528 BC, 752 years before the first Olympics, and the name Orte would derive from the ancient city of Orthe or Orthi.
History
Orte has ancient origins and was probably one of the cities that made up the Etruscan Federation. In the past, it was already an important river port, as Livy testifies, and became a vital center of the Roman road network with the construction of the Via Amerina in 241-240 BC.
And you, have you ever visited Orte?
