An overview of the province of Chieti
Hello everyone! Today we're talking about the province of Chieti, located in the Abruzzo region, one of Italy's most beautiful and unspoilt regions. The province of Chieti has a population of approximately 391,507 people and covers an area of 2,599 km², including 104 municipalities. It is the most populous province in Abruzzo and the second largest in size, after L'Aquila.
Physical geography
The landscape of the province of Chieti is characterized by mountains, hills, rivers and valleys that offer some of the most beautiful scenery in Italy. In the northern part, there are rugged and uninhabited mountains, while in the southern part, the landscape is more gentle and rich in small settlements. The flat terrain is mainly composed of the coastal plain and the valleys, including the Aterno-Pescara and Val di Sangro. In the inland area, there is the Maiella, the mountain massif that stands as one of the symbols of the province.
Orography
The Maiella, with its 2,793 meters high, is the second highest mountain in the Apennines after the Gran Sasso. The massif is characterized by 61 different mountains and 75 hills and, like many limestone massifs, is rich in karst phenomena and poor in surface waters. The meteoric waters in fact reappear downstream, with springs that sometimes reach massive dimensions, such as those of the Verde River in Fara San Martino. Both the eastern and western sides of the massif have two different landscapes, with gorges and valleys to the east and a single incision to the west (the Macchia di Caramanico).
Hydrography
The province of Chieti is rich in water resources, especially groundwater due to the karst phenomena of the mountains that characterize it. However, there are also numerous surface watercourses, including the main ones such as the Aterno-Pescara, Sangro and Trigno rivers, as well as the Alento, Aventino, Foro and Sinello.
Therefore, if you are nature lovers and are looking for a tourist destination where you can admire breathtaking landscapes, the province of Chieti might just be the place for you!
