The history of Ornìca
Origins and toponymy
The history of Ornìca has ancient roots. It is believed that the first settlements date back to the time of the barbarian invasions, when populations subjected to looting took refuge in remote places, sheltered from the impetus of conquering hordes. In particular, the inhabitants of the nearby Valsassina (presumably around the 6th century) arrived in the area of Ornìca, as demonstrated by some place names present in both areas.
The toponymy of Ornìca derives from the extensive ash forests (in Latin ''fraxinus ornus'') that characterized the territory in those times.
The Middle Ages
Then, in the 9th century, the territory passed under the control of the Holy Roman Empire, which then left it to the diocese of Milan. During the Middle Ages, Ornìca and the neighboring municipalities of Val Stabina, developed thanks to the extractive activity of ferrous materials, with the consequent creation of numerous jobs.
Modern Age
All of this continued with the arrival of the Serenissima, which guaranteed numerous tax breaks to the entire area. In 1647, the village obtained administrative autonomy, separating from the other neighboring municipalities. During this period, a plague epidemic wiped out much of the population of Ornìca, which went from 176 inhabitants to 42.
