Ponte di Nava
Ponte di Nava: a hamlet of Ormea on the Tanaro River
Hello friends! Today, I will be talking about a small hamlet called Ponte di Nava, located on the Tanaro River at the border with the province of Imperia. The name derives from the bridge over the river, which is a mandatory passage for those who want to reach Col di Nava from Piedmont. The hamlet is located 6 km from Ormea, 36 km from Imperia, and 95 km from Cuneo.
Geographic Location
As I mentioned, Ponte di Nava is located on the Tanaro River, which constitutes the administrative border between Piedmont and Liguria, in particular between the province of Imperia and the province of Cuneo. The state road 28 of Colle di Nava Col di Nava transits on it. The main square of the hamlet hosts the parish church of the Santissima Trinità.
History of Ponte di Nava
Ponte di Nava has an ancient history. The bridge over the Tanaro River was the ancient border between the Republic of Genoa and the Duchy of Savoy, and later between the Republic of Genoa and the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861). Until 1869, the hamlet had few inhabitants, but by the end of the 19th century, it developed into a center of trade with nearby populations. Unfortunately, during World War II, the bridge suffered multiple damages from the partisans of the Garibaldi Brigades who were operating in the area.
Conclusions
In summary, Ponte di Nava is a pleasant and ancient hamlet of Ormea that played an important historical role thanks to its bridge over the Tanaro River, which was used as an ancient border between states and suffered damages during World War II. If you happen to be in the area, it is definitely a place to visit!
